Latest Portfolio Headlines
- GE:
Ignore the slowdown in China at your own peril, writes Ben Levisohn after GDP growth slipped to 7.5% in Q2, and Beijing shows little sign of easing policy to re-boost it. Consumer staples and health care stocks with high China exposure like Mead Johnson (MJN) and PerkinElmer (PKI) have recently underperformed (on a relative basis), but also at risk are those in materials, industrials, and IT with a heavy reliance on China: DOW, ALTR, EXPD, GE. On the other hand there's Las Vegas Sands (LVS) - maybe unfairly (relatively) punished for its Macau exposure even as the secular growth of gambling there should offset any cyclical economic weakness in China. - AAPL, JPM:
With the major averages edging towards pricey territory, Andrew Bary of Barron's screens the S&P 500 for big cap stocks trading at single-digit multiples, then narrows the list to those whose prospects can be argued to be good. The names are all familiar ones, but their presence on the list may surprise: VLO, MPC, HPQ, FCX, ESV, PSX, GM, MET, WDC, PRU, APA, JPM, C, DE, AAPL. - AAPL, MSFT:

Apple (AAPL) has bought transportation app developer HopStop, Bloomberg reports. HopStop's data and navigation tools for local transportation options such as buses, trains, taxi services, and bike paths would help address user complaints about Apple Maps' dearth of public transit data/features relative to Google Maps. The report comes shortly after Apple confirmed it bought Canadian location database developer Locationary. - JPM:

Microsoft (MSFT -11.2%) board members are in talks with activist investor ValueAct over the firm's demand for a board seat, Reuters reports. Sources say Microsoft's lack of CEO succession planning is a prominent issue in the discussions. Steve Ballmer, who has plenty of critics, has previously suggested he'll leave in the 2017-2018 timeframe. Nomura suggested earlier today Microsoft's poorly-received FQ4 results and FQ1 guidance could lead to an activist push. ValueAct owned just 0.4% of Microsoft at the end of Q1, but its stake is believed to have risen since. Shares +0.6% AH. (more on Microsoft) - MSFT:

Apple (AAPL -1.5%) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) are still holding patent settlement talks, but there's no sign a resolution is near, the WSJ reports, citing sources and legal docs. The companies have reportedly held face-to-face talks in Seoul and drafted a memorandum of understanding about a deal in February, but discussions appear to have faltered afterwards. Apple and its top rival/component supplier continue to battle in the U.S. (via the ITC and federal courts), Europe, Japan, and elsewhere. JPMorgan (JPM -0.6%) announces the retirement of David Cote and Ellen Futter from the Board. Only the timing was in question for this move as the two sat on the risk policy committee despite having limited or negative experience with such matters at financial institutions. Both were reelected at the May annual meeting, but with a slim majority of the vote, and management leaked board changes were coming. - MSFT:
Microsoft (MSFT -11%) is plunging following its FQ4 miss, and is taking other PC-related names lower with it. HPQ -4.2%. INTC -1.4%. NVDA -2.2%. Goldman (Sell) predicts lower Windows price points for smaller/touch devices and emerging markets piracy will lead Windows sales growth to lag already-weak PC shipment growth. Nomura (Buy) thinks activism (led by ValueAct?) is now more likely, and could drive shares higher. Some bright spots: SQL Server and System Center revenue grew 16% and 14% Y/Y; Lync revenue rose 30%; over 50% of the Fortune 500 is using Azure; and "Windows Phone" revenue (much of it consists of Android royalties) rose by $222M .
