California covers the most ailments, with more than 100 covered for patients seeking to access the medical marijuana program.
Only a licensed and approved state doctor can provide you with a legal medical marijuana evaluation.
You have to see a doctor first, then be examined, then get a written letter of recommendation for a medical cannabis card before one can be issued to you by your state.
Your doctor’s signature must be on the recommendation for it to be valid.
After you get your recommendation, you must submit it along with a valid photo ID, any application fees and other necessary documents to your state health department for approval.
The state will review your application and decide to approve or reject it. If they approve it, they will issue you a valid medical cannabis card.
Your medical cannabis card is only valid for the period of one year, after which you must renew it in your state to enjoy the legal protection that it offers.
Holders of state issued medical cannabis cards are protected from legal prosecution for possessing, transporting, using, and in most states growing, medical cannabis.
A medical cannabis card cannot be shared, nor can your medicine. If you have a caregiver, they must be approved by the state and issued their own card.
