Market Report And Chat Posts (Sept. 2, 2020): PAM Goes Large For Long Bond, And Short Gold Bets
Asset class modeling, Macro analyst, Bonds & Equities, Currencies & Commodities
Seeking Alpha Analyst Since 2011
Robert P. Balan runs Predictive Analytic Models, #1-rated trading unit at Seeking Alpha. PAM trades Swiss HF funds using Federal Reserve, US Treasury, and term (money) market liquidity data flows as basis for trading decisions. He is domiciled in Zurich, Switzerland.
Robert Balan has 5 decades of experience in the financial markets. Education in Mining Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, M.S in Quantitative Finance, and training in Economics led to a commodity analysis career during the commodity boom of the early 1970s. Robert made a switch to global macro focus in the early 1980 when the commodity bull market waned, with specialization in foreign exchange. Robert wrote a very high profile daily FX analysis while Geneva-based (Lloyds Bank Int'l) in the mid-1980s (the first FX commentary with a real global readership, "most accessed" in the Reuters and Telerate networks from 1988 to 1994).
He worked for Swiss Bank Corp and Union Bank of Switzerland (precursors of today's new UBS) as head of technical research in various finance centers (London, New York, and subsequently, head of prop trading at SBC in Toronto ) from the late 1980s to mid-1990s. A stint at Bank of America as head of global technical research followed in late 1990s to the early 2000s.
Robert returned to Switzerland in 2004 as head of technical research and strategy, and FX market analyst for Swiss Life Asset Management in Zurich. Robert wrote FX analysis and capital markets commentary for Saxo Bank (Denmark) in the early 2000s. He joined Diapason Commodities Management (CH) in Lausanne in 2008 as senior market strategist, and subsequently Chief Market Strategist, utilizing fundamental macroeconomic drivers and structural/technical data in modeling asset price and sector movements.
Robert wrote a book on the Elliott Wave Principle in 1988, which has been hailed by the London Society of Technical Analysts as best ever book written on the subject. Robert is a member of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE), U.S.A.
Summary
- 10Yr yield is falling in accordance with the mini-seasonality hiccup of the TCB. By the time this mini-hiccup is over, the 10yr would have fallen to 0.57% - 0.56%.
- That much outlook deserves a stake -- PAM buys TN futures to take advantage of that move. We are not doing short equities, we go long bonds instead, large.
- Yields have been falling for at least a day, set equities still rose. That's potential trouble. That said, we bet large on long bonds, short gold which have better optics.
- The bottom in yield in this construct is TD 178 - TD 180. Maybe that is all there is to bear seasonality that I wrote about at Seeking Alpha. Nonetheless, the sell-off could be sharp, and deep.
- The schizophrenia and high variability in the equities response to falling yields is the primary reason why we opted out of shorting even the recent market dogs (which have performed relatively well today). The bond market is more predictable. Honestly, yes. The MOTUs are of one track mind when they get into a groove. That I know.
(Here is the current, active spreadsheet positioning and P&L for the PAM flagship Swing Fund). It is delayed by one update cycle.
(Here is the year-to-date performance of the Swing Fund, as of August 31, 2020).

10Yr yield is falling in accordance with the mini-seasonality hiccup of the TCB chart above (brown box).
By the time this mini-hiccup is over, the 10yr would have fallen to 0.57% - 0.56%

That much outlook in a day or so deserves a stake -- PAM buys TN futures to take advantage of that move if it happens. PAM buys TN futures to take advantage of that move. We are not doing short equities, we go long bonds instead, large.
all PAM BUYS 432 CONTRACTS OF TNU0 AT BREACH OF 157-21, FOR ALL THREE FUNDS.
We could see 159-04 on this upmove in the futures.
kjeffrSep 2, 2020 11:05 AM
Just curious as dec contract is now more liquid. Should we still trade U contract? Only 345 lots traded on sep20 contract vs 35400 on the dec20
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 10:54 AM
That, gals/guys, is a classic irregular consolidation.
That of course brings us the the short term outlook in equities. We have said that whatever equities may do/have done after NY close last night brings us to levels to short -- which I will decline (for once).
pa292Sep 2, 2020 10:58 AM
RB : effect on the USD ?
robert.p.balan Aug 31, 2020 8:13 PM predictive-analytic-models The DXY and gold are at least one to two days lagged in their response to yield changes. We have been saying this a number of times. If the Gold or DXY development vexes you, hedge it with NQ. But if that is not what you want, just time the change overs in the yield, as it applies to DXY and Gold.
farkusSep 2, 2020 11:02 AM
I'm curious why you are choosing not to short equities
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 11:03 AM
farkus -- yields have been falling for at least a day, and equities still rose; that potential trouble -- I explained that well yesterday, I think.
That said, we will bet large on long bonds, which have better optics at this point, than equities whose response to falling yields have been all over the place.
farkusSep 2, 2020 11:05 AM
Yes you did.
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 11:07 AM
I am trading TNU because it is still the one mapped in my brain -- but TNZ is more liquid I understand, so go ahead and use TNZ. Just compare the basis difference. and adjust accordingly.
freer7Sep 2, 2020 11:12 AM
Robert, a further qn,do u foresee 10y rising above 0.8 after the irregular? Thanks
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 11:19 AM
My Spanish-speaking grandma used to admonish me with this word "adelantado" -- whenever I ask questions that are several steps ahead of the current situation (the best way to learn, I know). But frankly, I am not 100% sure this irregular thesis will compute. So you are a bit adelantado with this question now. Ask me again when we have seen the irregular done.
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 11:34 AM
Another irregular taking shape in the Gold space (XAU) -- time to sell some GC

RB, is 1909 still valid for the close order?
robert.p.balanSep 2, 2020 4:17 PM
I think we will see that by the time this sell off is done.

bogeygolfSep 2, 2020 4:39 PM
you've certainly been right on the rates moves these last 10 days
robert.p.balanSep 2, 2020 4:55 PM
the way the MOTUs rely on historic seasonality is amazing.
nffmendoncaSep 2, 2020 2:54 PM
If this is bear seasonality everyone can lose the sell button!!!!
flytightSep 2, 2020 3:14 PM
That is what I was waiting for Robert. Very helpful, thank you.
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 4:05 PM
I am surprised that NG is holding up so well -- it used to be that at a whiff of equity weakness, NG will buckle at the knees as well.

4? potential hurricanes in the cue in the Gulf...
robert.p.balanSep 2, 2020 5:00 PM
That would be superb

bogeygolfSep 2, 2020 5:18 PM
I'm seeing research that COVID numbers are improving and that will lead to higher long bond rates
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 5:32 PM
Much higher rates in Q4 bogey - so high you won't believe it now.
john.derSep 2, 2020 5:35 PM
Robert, when you think the timing is right, it would be great to revisit the long ZF/short ZB trade and add to it for those that did not enter at first.

Lets try to get into gold short again
nevernoobSep 2, 2020 5:40 PM
Robert, this would just be adding to existing short, correct?
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 5:46 PM
yes, to bring the cost basis down
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 5:48 PM
John -- here is how that spread is going -- we have to roll over those futures position twice.
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 5:50 PM
The orange numbers would be USZ0 and FVZ0 futures values. Compare those with the current values of the Z basis 30yr and 5yr contracts.
john.derSep 2, 2020 5:52 PM
Thanks!
robert.p.balanModeratorLeaderOwnerSep 2, 2020 5:54 PM
The spread is making making money on both front and back end.

kiannSep 2, 2020 6:40 PM
thanks ... I have been trying to follow the EWM and markets and today seems like quite a wild ride!... Is the PAM model view biased towards short gold in the daily time-frame view right now? But also avoiding shorts in the RTY/equity markets?
I see FANG stocks weakening today, but couldnt find any key obvious drivers (notwithstanding the Fed liquidity flows)
