As CEO of The Broadsmoore Group, AJ Discala has embedded social responsibility in the business by initiating a charitable arm of the firm, To Be Giving Foundation.
“Profit is an opportunity for generosity. I admire great businessmen like Jack Welch who established a practice of conscious philanthropy,” says AJ Discala. “He was a tremendous leader at GE, and in his ‘retirement’ he’s turning around to make sure that the next generation is equipped to take the reins,” Discala added, referencing Welch’s teaching at MIT Sloan School, as well as his major contributions to Chancellor University and Sacred Heart University.
Among contemporary business models, Discala says the TOMS team is hitting the marks. “TOMS offers an excellent example of entrepreneurial business married to social philanthropy,” says Discala. “In our world, there is no shortage of need and no shortage of creativity. What’s extraordinary here and worth congratulating is that, instead of resting on success, Blake Mycoskie and the TOMS team found a way to expand and sustain a new opportunity. Kudos to TOMS.”
“Mycoskie’s excitement, married with commitment and patience, inspires me as an investor to seek opportunities to examine, invest in, mentor and motivate companies willing to make similar commitments appropriate to their sectors,” said AJ Discala.
