But, I also also pay close attention to key metrics, both stock specific and relative to the market, the stock's industry and historic averages. Dividend investors LOVE dividend growth.  Key metrics that dividend investors look for are the annual dividend growth rate as well as how often a company raises its dividend.

We went on the hunt for extreme dividend stocks.  We looked for stocks that raised their dividends every year for the past 20 years.  This is no small accomplishment.  Several recessions, including the latest Great Recession, took many companies out of contention since they had to keep their dividends steady, reduce them or even eliminate them altogether.  It's probably not surprising that our list is without, save one stock, any financial firms.
