New Projection for Bank Failures

John Kanas, CEO of Florida's BankUnited, has given CNBC a new estimate that another 1,000 banks will fail in the coming two years (here).  This is intermediate in number between the 416 banks now on the FDIC watch list (here) and the 1,882 banks given a failing grade by Christopher Whalen, managing director at research firm Institutional Risk Analytics (here).

Given that the FDIC watch list looks forward one (or maybe two) quarters, the question to ask is:  Which is the better estimate, 1,000 or 1,882?  Whatever the right number is, it is obvious that insiders think the worst is yet to come for banks.
