Fire Volcker?

Brown Brothers Harriman blog, Foreign Exchange, has an unsigned Op Ed calling for Paul Volcker to be fired by Pres. Obama.  They feel that his recent remarks are insubordinate and an affront to the president's policies.

There is one possibility that the blog piece does not appear to consider.  What if the recent remarks by Volcker were pre-approved by the White House?  It has been a long time since we have had a president who relishes intellectual exchange and debate.  It may have been a strategic move to agree to have an opposing argument presented in civil debate.  Obama may long for issues to be contested on an intellectual level, since much public debate has been loaded with emotion, rhetoric and ideology.

If the proposed scenario is correct, Paul Volcker should not be fired.  He should be praised for presenting the intellectual grindstone for Obama to sharpen his policies and improve their direction.  However, is Obama prepared for the case that there may be many people like me who think Volcker is on the right side of this "debate"?  Read the Op Ed here.
