Awash with cash and frequently gun-shy about investing it, publicly-traded U.S. companies are spending heavily on stock buybacks: S&P claims buybacks from S&P 500 companies hit $118B in Q3 - up for the 9th straight quarter, and rising 49% Y/Y. XOM led the way with $5.47B in buybacks, followed by JPM with $4.43B. S&P 500 tech companies collectively bought back $23.6B in shares.
