Military analysts say Iran probably can't completely shut down the Strait of Hormuz, but that might not be necessary for it to achieve its goal of forcing the U.S. to back off its planned sanctions on oil exports. The Iranians would be able to harass traffic, which could panic markets, drive up shipping insurance rates and spark a rise in world oil prices.
