A bit of data mining by researchers finds hedge funds may be fudging the prices of their stock holdings to make returns appear better than they are. Could the discrepancies be random? Sure, but the research show funds that exhibited the most serious deviations were more likely to report smoother returns. Caveat emptor as the SEC can't be bothered to look into the matter.
