Now that Europe is fully stuck in the quagmire, adhering strictly to fiscal austerity at all costs may not be the answer, former Secretary General of NATO Javier Solana writes. Economies need the ability to generate growth in order to successfully service their debt into the future, but flexibility must be accompanied by substantive structural reform to ensure fiscal prudence once the economy improves and to avoid a similar outcome in the future.
