Lockheed Martin (LMT) and Raytheon (RTN) are vying to win a $1B contract for the first phase of a $6B Pentagon project called Space Fence, which is a radar system that would quintuple the amount of space debris that the U.S. can track.

The radar would enable the U.S. to better warn operators of satellites and manned vehicles to move their craft before a collision occurs with any debris.

An estimated 500,000 man-made pieces of junk orbit the earth, ranging from paint flecks to a deactivated 9-ton satellite.
