It's better to be a manager than an investor in hedge funds: Since 1998, just 3% of hedge fund profits have gone to investors, with the funds themselves and funds of funds gobbling up the rest in fees. The number is somewhat skewed by big investor losses in 2008 (while the funds still got their money). Where are the customers' yachts?
