Apartment vacancies rose to a 22-year high in Q2, climbing to 7.5% from 6.1% the year before. Analysts who expected potential homebuyers to opt for rentals amid falling house prices instead found that job losses and pay cuts substantially shrank the pool of potential tenants. Silver lining: signs the shadow inventory may be leveling off.
