This is one of the most stupid ideas I've heard in a long time. ROI doesn't make sense at this point, especially when the government is broke. Ya - may be when we have a surplus. When our education system is broken, it doesn't mean that because we don't have access to books. Handing out Kindle is not going to solve our education problems. How about printing cheaper books to start? Books in many countries are lighter and cheaper. Yes, the paper is much thinner, but who cares! You can still read the text. Or how about taking that money setting aside for Kindle and invest it in better meals for the kids or other programs to enhance their learning. Seriously.

Man, Amazon must be lobbying hard to boost the sales of its Kindle.

...great idea!!...I homeschool and the Kindle DS is the greatest aid I have found so far...each kid has one; I transferred copies of their textbooks plus an assortment of reference books and study aids onto each device; I prepare homework assignments a week in advance and store them on the device as well...they are given objectives to reach and allowed to schedule each one to suit them...and I think I have only touched the tip of the iceberg in terms of what I will be able to accomplish with it...I've seen various programs aiming to provide kids with laptops...but I think using laptops to teach is absurdly inefficient......fifteen minutes of good solid study in a textbook accomplishes more than probably five or six HOURS on a laptop...and a Kindle lets kids carry ALL of their books and have them handy to study ANY one they want at ANY time they feel like it...go Kindle!!
