France to vote against continuing glyphosate use in EU

|By:, SA News Editor

France's environment minister says the country will vote against the continued use of weedkiller glyphosate, adding to uncertainty over the future of widely-used products such as Monsanto's (NYSE:MON) Roundup in the European Union.

The EU license for glyphosate expires at the end of this month, and if it is not extended, manufacturers would have six months to phase out products containing the herbicide.

A vote on the license issue is expected on June 24 from an appeal committee of political representatives of the 28 EU nations; if no decision is reached by qualified majority there, then the European Commission could choose to act on its own.
