American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL) agrees to pay $1.6M in penalties and fines for violating a U.S. rule that prohibits tarmac delays of more than three hours.

The U.S. Department of Transportation says the penalties equal the previous record for violations of tarmac delay regulations that Southwest Airlines paid in January 2015.

A large portion of the settlement is related to a single winter weather event that occurred in 2013 at its hub in Charlotte.
