Texas Gulf Coast city issues water warning after chemical spill

Officials in Corpus Christi, Tex., warned residents and businesses today not to use tap water after a chemical spill was suspected of contaminating the municipal water supply, prompting the closing of schools and local businesses and a run on water at grocery stores.

Some are blaming Valero Energy (NYSE:VLO), which operates refineries in the area, but the company says the spill probably was caused by a third party operating near its asphalt terminal.

City officials are not yet clear on the extent of the contamination but say they are encouraged from initial testing on the water supply.
