- U.S. Trade Representative Lighthizer has asked the U.S. International Trade Commission for a report to help Pres. Trump take “appropriate and feasible action” to support domestic solar panel manufacturers as the White House considers imposing tariffs on low-cost imported panels.
- Lighthizer specifically asked the U.S. ITC to identify any “unforeseen developments” that led to U.S. companies being harmed, a move that could indicate an effort to head off any challenges at the WTO should Trump impose tariffs - or it could be a sign that Trump is seeking a reason not to impose tariffs at all - says trade policy analyst Clark Packard.
- If the ITC is unable to point to any unforeseen circumstances, Trump may have an easy reason to say no to Suniva's trade complaint, Packard surmises.
