Venture capital deals of the week

  • Asian ride-hail: Google (GOOG, GOOGL) and Samsung (OTC:SSNNF, OTC:SSNLF) Venture participated in a $1.2B fundraising round for Indonesian ride-hailing and delivery company Go-Jek, according to Reuters sources.  Other participants included Temasek, Meituan-Dianping, KKR, and Warburg Pincus. The round gives Go-Jek a $4B valuation.
  • Google’s reportedly contributed $100M, and the round marks the first time the tech giant has invested in an Asian ride-hailing firm.
  • Go-Jek competes with Grab and Uber (UBER), which both have SoftBank (OTCPK:SFTBY, OTCPK:SFTBF) backing. Go-Jek received prior backing from Tencent (OTCPK:TCEHY, OTCPK:TCTZF) and JD.com (NASDAQ:JD).
  • Chinese rentals: Tencent co-led a $622M Series A round in Chinese apartment rental startup Ziroom. Warburg Pincus and Sequoia Capital China shared the lead with other backers including General Atlantic, Source Code, and New Hope.
  • Ziroom leases apartments from owners, renovates, and then subleases to renters. The company manages 500K rooms in nine Chinese cities. The concept is slightly similar to Airbnb (AIRB) but with longer-term rentals.
  • Self-driving tech: Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) Ventures participated in a $112M Series A round for self-driving tech startup Pony.ai, which is led by a former Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) architect.  Morningside Venture Capital and Legend Capital co-led with other investors in the populated round including Hongtai Capital, Legend Star, and Puhua Capital.
  • Pony.ai is building Level 4 autonomous driving tech, which means the vehicles can perform all of the driving functions for an entire trip, even in inclement weather, in suburban and urban environments.
  • The company’s self-driving cars are currently on Bay Area roads for testing. In Q1, Pony.ai will begin operating a fleet in the Southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.
  • Storytelling app: Tencent (again) popped up in a $51M round in Canadian storytelling and reading app Wattpad. Other backers included Kickstart Ventures and the Peterson Group. The round gives Wattpad a $398M valuation with $117.8M raised to date.
  • Wattpad combines crowdsourced and professionally produced content. The company plans to use the funding to invest in tech like machine learning to help match creators to consumers.
  • Tencent’s presence in the round makes sense since it owns WeChat, invests big in Snapchat, and Wattpad has a growing user presence in Asia. Wattpad has 65M users globally with 400M story uploads.
  • Streamer seeking $1B: Tencent-backed video streaming company Kuaishou is seeking investors for a new $1B funding round at a $17B valuation, according to Bloomberg.  Kuaishou, which is similar to Instagram or Periscope, could launch an IPO in the near future.
  • Kuaishou has more than 100M DAUs around the world. Rivals include YY (NASDAQ:YY) and Momo (NASDAQ:MOMO), and the shares of both dropped in U.S. trading after the fundraising report.
