Germany Chancellor Merkel reaches an agreement for tighter control over immigration with her Christian Social Union coalition partner, led by interior minister Horst Seehofer.
Merkel praised the deal as a “really good compromise” that would help regulate the movements of asylum seekers within the European Union without creating tensions with Germany’s neighbors.
There were concerns that the two parties, which have formed a coalition for ~70 years, would be unable to reach a deal, possibly toppling Merkel's government only three months after it had been formed.
The news should be viewed as a positive for the markets and the euro as it removes uncertainty around Germany, at least for now.
