Videogame sales accelerate again in August, up 37%

  • Videogame sales accelerated again year-over-year in August - another positive jump off June performance that was "only" a 26% gain.
  • Overall sales rose 37% Y/Y in August, to $3.33B, according to NPD Group. That brings 2020 year-to-date sales to $29.379B, up 23% from the same period in 2019.
  • July's sales had risen 32% and June's 26%, following a couple of very strong pandemic sales months (up 52% in May and up 73% in April).
  • Gains were broad in August. After dipping 2% last month, hardware sales rose 37% to $229M, with Nintendo Switch (OTCPK:NTDOY) setting a new August hardware record, analyst Mat Piscatella notes. Switch unit sales more than doubled from last August. Industrywide, YTD hardware sales are up 23%, to $2B.
  • And accessories sales jumped 42% to $166M, an August record for that category. The month's best-selling accessory was the PS4 DualShock 4 Wireless Controller Black (NYSE:SNE). • And over in content, sales rose 37% to $2.94B, bringing YTD gains to 22%, past $25.9B. (Last month marked a change in NPD content tracking, incorporating full games, add-on content (microtransactions and downloadable content) and subscription spending across console, cloud, mobile, portable, PC and VR platforms.)
  • The new dollar sales chart was topped by Madden NFL 21 (NASDAQ:EA) - topping the release-month sales for its 21st straight year, and improving on the launch month of Madden NFL 20 by a double-digit percentage. The title immediately becomes the year's sixth-best seller.
  • It topped the debut of UFC 4 (EA), which showed its best performance for an EA-published UFC title, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (NASDAQ:ATVI) at No. 3. Last month's sales leader, Ghost of Tsushima (SNE), dropped to No. 4.
  • Rounding out the game content top 10, it's mostly Nintendo: No. 5, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (OTCPK:NTDOY); No. 6, Ring Fit Adventure (OTCPK:NTDOY); No. 7, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (OTCPK:NTDOY); No. 8, Super Smash Bros.
