AT&T commits to carbon neutrality by 2035
- AT&T (T -0.3%) has committed to becoming carbon neutral across its global operations by 2035.
- That means it's targeting net zero on Scope 1 emissions (direct emissions from sources owned/controlled by the company, such as its fleet) and Scope 2 emissions (indirect emissions, resulting from generating purchased energy). It calculates that as the yearly equivalent of electricity use by 1,104,036 homes.
- In practical terms, that means focusing on six key initiatives: virtualizing many network functions (eliminating a lot of energy-intense network equipment); transitioning to a low-emissions fleet; accelerating energy efficiency and network optimization efforts; expanding sustainable film/TV production; supporting the renewable energy marketplace; and investing in carbon offsets.
- It's also expanding its Climate Change Analysis Tool from four Southeast pilot states to the entire U.S., to identify potential impacts of climate change on its network and operations.
