  • PG&E (NYSE:PCG) plans to cut power to 267K residents of northern California in its latest attempt to prevent its power lines from falling and starting wildfires in high winds.
  • The utility says the outages will occur in phases starting overnight in portions of 16 counties, located primarily north of Sacramento and in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
  • The National Weather Service says the combination of wind, low humidity and hot conditions will result in extreme wildfire risk starting late Saturday evening and remaining through Monday across much of northern California.
  • California has been battered this year by extreme weather and power outages: Last month, a record-breaking heat wave triggered the state's first rotating blackouts since 2001, while more than 8K wildfires have burned 3.6M acres in the state, choking cities with smoke.
