- Discovery (DISCA +1.6%) is finally bringing its streaming strategy into focus, planning to launch its service called (yes) Discovery Plus in January, CNBC reports.
- It will offer more details during a noon event.
- The service will debut with an ad-supported tier at $4.99/month, as well as a $6.99/month ad-free tier, according to the report.
- It's moving into some marked-up trails there: The $4.99/month is the same cost of Peacock's premium tier including ads, while the $6.99/month is close to the Disney Plus price.
- Meanwhile, as with Disney Plus, Discovery Plus is launching with a promotion with Verizon (VZ +1.4%), which will offer 55M customers up to 12 months of the streaming service for free depending on plan.
- Discovery is home to popular and well known brands including HGTV and Food Network as well as the eponymous Discovery Channel, but it's entering a crowded field of streamers around the same time as another new entrant in Paramount Plus. But partnerships such as the one with Verizon will be key as it looks to emerge from the pack with its own niche.
