- A federal jury in Texas rules that Intel (INTC -1.4%) violated two patents of Fortress Investment Group’s VLSI Technology and must pay $2.18B in damages.
- The damages include $1.5B for infringing on one patent and $675M for the other.
- Some inventors listed on the patents worked at NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ:NXPI), which will receive a piece of the damages.
- The patents are related to data processing system technology that VLSI alleges Intel used in certain processors.
- The win is just one cog of a complicated legal battle that spans eight patents and a few states with additional trials still scheduled for the same Texas court.
- Intel and Apple previously filed an antitrust suit against VLSI where Intel said VLSI was seeking billions in damages across its various patent suits.
- Intel has also challenged VLSI patents with the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
