  • Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is planning to build out its ad business with a second type of ad slot within its App Store.
  • The iPhone maker already sells ad spots for developers to receive the top result for specific search terms. Financial Times sources say that Apple will soon create an ad slot at the top of the "suggested" section of the App Store.
  • The new slot, which could roll out later this month, would offer developers a wider audience than the keyword-specific ads.
  • Apple's ad expansion comes just ahead of an iOS update that will require users to opt-in to targeted ads, a hard hit to the ad business of Google and Facebook.
  • The ad launch could also draw more regulatory scrutiny as the app stores of Apple and Google took center stage at a Senate antitrust hearing this week.
