  • Enbridge (ENB -0.1%) says it "will continue to deliver via Line 5 safe, reliable and affordable energy to fuel the region’s economies," reiterating its pledge to keep the pipeline running.
  • Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer six months ago set today as a deadline to shut Line 5, arguing the pipeline threatens the Great Lakes because it crosses along the bed of the Mackinac Strait.
  • A shutdown of Line 5 would "raise substantial federal and international questions relating to interstate and international commerce," Enbridge says, maintaining the state does not have the authority to order a closure.
  • Line 5 is a crucial energy artery for Ontario and Quebec in Canada, and for Michigan and surrounding states in the U.S. - all depending on it for gasoline, propane for heating homes and jet fuel.
  • With this in mind, former U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson tells Bloomberg that the impact of a Line 5 shutdown would compare to the current outage of the Colonial Pipeline.
  • Whitmer yesterday threatened to seize profits from Enbridge if the company continues to operate the pipeline past her deadline.
