Equity ETFs witnessed net inflows for fifteen of the past sixteen weeks

  • In this week's U.S. weekly fund flows insight report by Refinitiv Lipper ending May 26th, 2021, data points to the fact that market participants were net purchasers of fund assets, both traditional funds and exchange traded funds totaling +$77.9B.
  • Dissecting the data and investors witness during the week that market participants pumped +$65.6B into money market funds and +$8.2B into equity funds. Additionally, investors were net purchasers of +$2.6B of taxable bond funds and +$1.5B of tax-exempt bond funds.
  • Equity-based exchange traded funds bounced back from last week's outflows to inflows of +$9.3B. Equity exchange traded funds have now seen net positive inflows fifteen of the past sixteen weeks.
  • On the week, there were three equity ETFs that attracted over +$1B of inflows. The three ETFs that witnessed the most significant inflows were as follows: Invesco QQQ (NASDAQ:QQQ) +$1.6B, iShares: Core MSCI USA (BATS:QUAL) +$1.2B and JPMorgan: BetaBuilders Europe (BATS:BBEU) +$1.1B.
  • On the flip side, the three equity ETFs that experienced the largest outflows were SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEARCA:SPY) -$880M, Select Sector: Financial Sector SPDR (NYSEARCA:XLF) -$615M and iShares: Russell 2000 ETF (NYSEARCA:IWN) -$549M.
  • From an exchange traded fixed income fund standpoint, government-Treasury ETFs witnessed +$873M, corporate high-yield ETFs +$689M, and flexible funds ETFs +$359M. Corporate investment-grade ETFs were the only subsection of fixed income ETFs that saw net redemptions; outflows were $181M.
  • Of all the fixed income ETFs, iShares:1-3 Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:SHY) +$543M, iShares: Core U.S. Aggregate Bond (NYSEARCA:AGG) +$386M, and SPDR Bloomberg Barclays High Yield Bond (NYSEARCA:JNK) +$283M witnessed the largest inflows for the week.
  • In reverse, iShares: iBoxx Investment Grade Corporates (NYSEARCA:LQD) -$952M, iShares:20+ Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:TLT) -$403M, and iShares: Short Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:SHV)-$183M suffered the largest redemptions.
  • In other financial-related news, S&P 500: SPY has witnessed its highest short interest levels in 2021.
