- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (NYSE:DIS) easily held off Dear Evan Hansen (NASDAQ:CMCSA) to keep hold of the top spot at the weekend box office, and in the process became 2021's top grossing domestic film.
- It grossed $13.3 million in its fourth week of release at the top, bringing its cumulative total to $196.5 million and surpassing Black Widow's (DIS) $183.6 million. (Shang-Chi also has a worldwide total of $363.4 million, just behind Black Widow's global total of $378.4 million.)
- Aside from having the year's top two releases, Disney has five of the top eight: Behind Black Widow is Universal's (CMCSA) F9 ($173 million) and Paramount's (VIAC, VIACA) A Quiet Place Part II ($160 million), then Jungle Cruise from Disney ($114.9 million) and Free Guy from Disney's Fox acquisition ($114.1 million).
- Cruella rounds out Disney's haul with the eighth-best film at $86.1 million.
- Returning to this past weekend, the critically panned Broadway adaptation Dear Evan Hansen mustered $7.5 million and about $2,229 per screen - a disappointment, even though the inexpensively produced film is more likely to end up profitable than some of the pricier summer superhero tentpoles.
- Rounding out the top five for the weekend were Free Guy (DIS), powering on to another $4.13 million; Candyman (CMCSA), with $2.5 million in its fifth week; and Cry Macho (NYSE:T), drawing $2.1 million in its second week.
