It's not just hocus pocus: Stocks actually do underperform in even years. The inventory cycle typically lasts about two years, and over the last decade, Fidelity's Trevor Greetham says, the "stocking up" years - good for company profits and stocks - have been odd-numbered years while inventory drawdown years have been even-numbered ones.
