The U.S. fell out of Transparency International's list of the 20 least corrupt nations, thanks to declining faith in prevailing ethics due to "lending practices in the subprime crisis, the disclosure of Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme and rows over political funding." Too late to include in the calculus: the foreclosure mess.
