Japan estimates the cost from the earthquake to be between ¥16-¥25T ($200-$300B), vs. ¥10T for 1995's Kobe quake. Combined with a falloff in tax revenue due to likely GDP contraction, this will put the kibosh on a pre-earthquake plan to limit government bond issuance to just ¥44.3T ($550B) in 2011.
