MetLife (MET -0.8%) says it did nothing wrong in its apparent selective use of a Social Security death database in cutting off retirement income checks of its customers, while not using the same database until 20 years later to try to identify deceased life insurance policyholders whose beneficiaries were due payouts. The issue is now the subject of a multistate investigation.
