The biggest banks and mortgage lenders have amassed real estate empires they'd rather not have, owning a combined 872,000 homes as a result of the groundswell in foreclosures, almost twice as many as in 2007. They are also in the process of foreclosing on an additional 1M homes and may need to take possession of several million more in the years ahead.
