Master in Physics and Mathematics at Free University Amsterdam (1987). Using physics and mathematics to invest in stock markets. Started my investment research activities since 1996, mainly in technology stock. Developing a complex technical analysis model with predictive component on price. Model IndexClues is based upon complex polynomials (fractal / chaos theory) and applies to stock markets, stock market indices, commodities and currencies.
I'm 32, invest in the light of the Austrian economic tradition, which in today's environment means mostly precious metals and mining stocks using cycles and sentiment as timing mechanisms. ETF's, options, I also own some physical. I've been doing this independently for 3 years. I reserve a small chunk of my portfolio for speculating in biotech and technology where I believe appropriate.
It is very hard or impossible to time the broad market consistently — there are no famous investors that got rich by consistently knowing what the broad market would do next. This only makes sense, as there are just too many variables in the broad market. But there are many famous investors who got rich analyzing individual securities, and this is where you should put your focus. You can get an edge in individual securities. I have written 2 dutch books on value investing (search bol.com for "ruerd heeg"). As a mathematician (Ph.D.) I use quantitative strategies with statistically extremely high returns: net-nets and companies with low Enterprise Value/Earnings before Tax & Interest (EV/EBIT). When ranking on several metrics the 30-50 best stocks have 20-30% average annual returns. Since such stocks are rare I invest globally. See my article "Use Your Extraordinary Edge With These 2 Investment Strategies" (author's picks left below). Get the free trial of my Marketplace newsletter to learn more.

I take a long term, value oriented approach to identifying sources of highly attractive returns. While I do not go short, my returns are significantly less correlated with market averages than those of a typical long-only investor.

I'm a huge skeptic by nature. If you had to put me in an investment category, I would fall under "contrarian/value" investor. It's not an investment style that I picked but one that reflects my personality.

To those who had been following my articles, I apologize for my abrupt exit from posting on SA. In mid-2015, I decided that sharing my investing views with everyone on Earth with computer access just wasn't worthwhile, since that inherently includes some problematic individuals. Since then, I only occasionally publicly comment on stocks via Twitter. The rest of what follows was my SA profile so that I won't have to rewrite it in the unlikely event I resume posting articles publicly. Best of luck with your investments.

Vice President level professional with over six years of experience at a bulge bracket investment bank supporting Securities Sales & Trading. I have an undergraduate degree in Finance and am currently pursuing my MBA with a concentration in Finance as well. I have ten plus years of investing experience utilizing stocks, bonds, ETF’s, mutual funds and options to manage personal and family accounts.
Although all of my professional experience is on the Securities sell-side, I hope to move into a full time asset management/investment analysis role upon graduation from my MBA program. I follow the markets as a whole, from macroeconomic events to equities across the entire market cap spectrum, but my Seeking Alpha research and publications tend to focus on the small and mid-cap space. I believe this is the area in which the most value can be added from an independent and/or buy-side analyst standpoint, given the typical lack of coverage of these companies by most of the larger institutions. I am looking to leverage the Seeking Alpha platform in order to both promote and improve my investment analysis and writing skills, and hope that it could potentially open doors for me.
If you have questions about my publications, would like to know more about me or would just like to bounce around ideas, feel free to message me via Seeking Alpha.
10 years of buy-side investment experience.
