I grew up in Virginia where I attended Old Dominion College prior to joining the Army. After serving in Taiwan for two years working first as a crew chief at a transmitter site and later as a staff announcer for Armed Forces Radio and Television Taiwan, I returned to Long Beach California to finish college. Graduating from Cal State Long Beach with a Bachelors Degree in Broadcasting and a Masters Degree in Higher Education led to a teaching opportunity at Long Beach City College where I was department head and coordinator for the Radio and Television Program. While at LBCC I had the honor of representing the entire faculty as president of California Teachers Association and serving as Chief Negotiator for a three-year contract during California’s Prop 13 education budget cuts. I chaired the Multimedia Entertainment Initiative for California. In 2000, I served as the Director of Education for the California Global Classroom Project responsible for recruiting teachers and students to represent California at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperative international meeting held in Brunei. I have produced and directed a number of cable TV shows including award winning news programs. I was the travel and guest coordinator for the national television show “This Is Your Life”. I have experience in developing advertising and promotion programs. I introduced Streaming Media technology to the Long Beach Congressional Cup that provided international viewing capability. I served on the National Board of Directors for the Broadcast Education Association representing the views of Two Year Colleges throughout the country and was also a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). Living in Long Beach has provided an array of opportunities from serving on the Committee of 300 supporting the Toyota Grand Prix to serving as a scout leader and youth soccer coach. I served on the Board for Long Beach Junior Crew and was Regatta Chair for two years. I was a founding member of the Shoreline Yacht Club and am currently an active member of both the Long Beach Yacht Club and the Nawiliwili Yacht Club of Kauai. I currently hold a U. S. Coast Guard captain’s license for 100-ton power and sail. I have enjoyed working with a number of Long Beach non-profits both as Board member and executive director. I currently serve on the Community Hospital Long Beach Foundation Board.
