I am a graduate student in biostatistics at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and an individual investor. While my investments are mostly in low-cost index funds, I enjoy analyzing stock market trends and trying to find ways to beat the market.
Right now I'm convinced that the best way to beat the market is to pair a leveraged S&P 500 ETF (e.g. UPRO) with a total bond fund (e.g. BND). With one-third allocated to UPRO and two-thirds to BND, you get a portfolio with beta approximately 1 (depending on the current correlation between stocks and bonds) and alpha two-thirds that of BND's alpha. The result is a portfolio that sort of mimics SPY, but with an extra couple percentage points added on each year.
I favor computational investment methods over traditional fundamental or technical analysis, which require subjective analysis of earnings reports and visual assessments of price charts, respectively.

I write about dividend growth stocks on my website http://www.dividendgrowthinvestor.com/. I am mostly a buyer of high quality dividend stocks, with solid competitive advantages. My holding period is forever, as long as the dividend is at least maintained. I tend to concentrate my efforts on stocks which grow earnings and dividends, which provides outstanding total returns over time. I only focus my attention to stocks with sustainable dividend payments. I am also a firm believer in diversification accross sectors and geographic locations. I have been focusing my attention particularly to companies that regularly increase dividends to their shareholders since 2007. On my blog I share my thoughts on investing in dividend paying stocks that have consistently increased their payments over time and tips on growing my dividend income. I hope that my blog will serve as an inspiration for my readers and that it would change their financial lives for the better. I am a buy-side analyst for various private wealth managers, institutional and accredited investors. My goal for articles on Seeking Alpha is to bring exposure to business development companies (BDCs) that finance small to medium sized businesses, typically overlooked by banks. BDCs are an instrument for investors to earn healthy dividends by avoiding double taxation at the corporate level and allowing income to flow directly to shareholders. Please see website link below for more information.
Nicholas Marshi is the Editor of the BDC Reporter (www.bdcreporter.com), the leading online publication dedicated to the Business Development Company ("BDC") sector. The BDC Reporter is read by thousands of individual and institutional investors for its broad and incisive coverage of this $60bn segment of the financial sector. Since 2008, Mr Marshi has also been a frequent contributor to Seeking Alpha, penning hundreds of articles and blog posts. Mr Marshi is also the Chief Investment Officer of Southland Capital Management (SCM), a Registered Investment Adviser based in Los Angeles, California. SCM manages investment portfolios, both for its own account and those of third parties, solely in the publicly traded securities of BDCs. Since 2009 SCM has also managed a "friends and family" investment fund focused on the BDC sector, which has recently opened up to third party accredited investors. Prior to forming SCM, Mr. Marshi managed two private equity firms. Both firms were active in acquiring lower middle market private companies, principally in Southern California. Before getting into Private Equity, Mr Marshi was the head of the Los Angeles office of Kleinwort Benson Limited, a British merchant bank, from 1987-1990. Mr Marshi was involved in investment banking, lending and principal investing activities. At the outset of his career, Mr Marshi held various positions with Citibank at locations worldwide including Athens, Dubai, Puerto Rico and London.
