I am a value oriented, contrarian investor with almost 3 decades of experience in the stock market and fifteen years of experience investing in real estate. In the stock market I have found that the best investing opportunities occur when quality companies are priced for incredible stress or even complete failure by the ever manic-depressive Mr. Market. I find myself the most interested in companies when the market is overwhelmingly pessimistic towards them.

I manage the capital of only a handful of families and I see it as my number one job to protect their financial security. They don’t pay me to sell them investment products, beat an index, abandon true investing for mindless diversification or follow the Wall Street lemmings down the primrose path. I manage their money exactly as I manage my own so I don’t take any risk at all unless I strongly believe it is worth taking. Blogging here on SA is part of my research. Having always been a learning machine, I speak five languages, have worked as a sales agent, project manager, translator, computer consultant, software engineer, built a house with my own hands, published books and essays on literature, philosophy and art, have written for magazines of various kinds in different countries.
After retiring early in 2004, little by little, I have become a fund manager for some friends and myself, following the principles of value investing laid out by Benjamin Graham, Phil Fisher, Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett.
In 2015 I won the Seeking Alpha Contrarian Contest and have been a regular contributor to Seeking Alpha Pro right from the start.
I strive to gather above-average knowledge about my stock picks. As this takes many hours, despite managing my portfolio full-time, you should not expect me to throw out new ideas each and every week.
One can't be an expert on everything, but can try to acquire deep knowledge about a careful selection of businesses. Only knowledge can provide the required conviction to profit from temporary market inefficiencies (i.e. buy into a sell-off).
If you want to learn more about my research process, take a look at my Marketplace service "Stability & Opportunity". It offers access to the totality of my research notes and updates several times daily on average.

(2) To give the millions and millions of retail investors fundamental and professionally-written stock research for the first time ever.

Members of our subscription services have access to the Margin of Safety value-oriented portfolio and discounted access to our software.
We apply Buffett's and Charlie Munger's four filters in selecting stocks as part of a concentrated portfolio (10-15 equities). Criteria for selecting companies are:
1.They are strong businesses; as defined by high long-term cash generation, above-average return on invested capital, possession of favorable underlying economics and a durable competitive advantage, good financial health, and above-average profit margins
2. We understand the business
3. They are run by competent management
4. They are available at bargain prices.
We require a 25-50% margin of safety, depending on the stability and economic moat for the company.
In addition to equity research services, we are a member of the Gerson Lehman Group Expert Counsel of Advisors and provide research/consulting services to investment banks.

Tim Travis is a veteran deep value investor and money manager. Travis has extensive experience in traditional investments such as stocks and bonds, in addition to having a unique methodology of combining options and distressed investing with value investing to generate income, reduce risk, and to add an element of timing. Currently Tim Travis is the founder, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Investment Officer of T&T Capital Management. T&T Capital Management is a Scottsdale, Arizona based Registered Investment Advisor that manages accounts for both individual and institutional investors. Travis was born in Laguna Beach, California and became captivated with the value investment philosophy in his early teens through reading books written by Benjamin Graham, and the shareholder letters from Berkshire Hathaway, and the Buffett Partnership L.P. Tim Travis became intrigued by the notion that stocks aren’t just pieces of paper but instead are fractional shares of a business that can be analyzed by comprehensive analysis of the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows. He majored in Business and Economics at the University of California Santa Barbara, graduating in 2004, and he also had the privilege of studying international economics at the University of Richmond in Florence, Italy. Tim Travis got his feet wet in finance working for both Scottrade and AG Edwards & Sons during his college career. Upon graduation Travis worked at the Vanguard Group in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was there that he learned that most mutual funds underperform their respective indexes, and he became disappointed at the overwhelming diversification in most mutual funds, that really makes most of them function as “closet” index funds. After leaving the Vanguard Group, Travis worked for a small futures and commodities firm in Mission Viejo, California. It was there that Tim developed an adept knowledge of options, particularly the selling of options to take advantage of the higher probabilities involved. It was also during this time in his life that Travis began reading everything he could possibly find on value investing. Some of his role models in the field are Warren Buffett, Martin Whitman, Bruce Berkowitz, Seth Klarman, Peter Lynch, Glenn Greenberg, etc. After working with clients from around the world Travis broke away and started T&T Investment Management L.L.C. At T&T, Travis refined his unique methodology combining value investing, with the selling of options to generate income and reduce risk. T&T experienced explosive growth by partnering with a local commodities firm. After several years Tim Travis realized that without controlling the majority of the company any longer, he didn’t have full control over the company’s strategic direction. Divergent business principles caused Tim Travis to break away and form T&T Capital Management. At TTCM which Tim Travis is the sole owner, he is allowed to offer only the best products and services, at a reasonable price, without conflicts of interest. T&T Capital Management’s goal is build wealth for both individual and institutional investors, and to accomplish these goals Travis as Chief Investment Officer employs his deep value investing techniques. Each account is managed on a day to day, personal basis, and there are no cookie cutter portfolios defined only by one’s age and risk tolerance. Every security is researched and hand selected by Travis and his research team. T&T Capital Management takes pride in first class customer service and research which is regularly communicated to clients for education purposes.
I just recently caught the investing bug and started taking an active interest in my (presently meager) portfolio in October, 2011. Turns out I'm not too bad at making my own picks, and I really enjoy doing my own research. So far my picks have significantly outperformed those of my high-priced broker (by about 10X). I've only got about 17 years left before I'll have to retire, and I've gotta get a move on if I want to enjoy my Golden Years and not end up having to work as a WalMart greeter on the graveyard shift. Seeking Alpha and The Motley Fool have helped me learn a great deal in a short period of time, but I've got a long way to go. I'm currently focused on building a portfolio of solid, stable dividend growth ... More stocks, with some pure growth (speculative) positions thrown in. At present I have 30 positions that yield an average of 5.3% in dividends. I'm hoping to learn more about options and save enough on the side so I can start playing with trading options; I'm looking forward to actively managing my portfolio in my retirement, and want to get really good at it before then.
Veteran options-oriented value investor.
Options can make you a riskier speculator - or they can make you a better value investor, a better dividend growth investor, or a better high yield income investor
Incorporating customized and conservative value-oriented option strategies can significantly improve your performance while also helping you overcome the biggest drawbacks to value investing (rare bargain opportunities on truly world class businesses), dividend growth investing (takes too long), and current high yield income (high risk).
For the last 7+ years, via the Great Option Trading Strategies website, I've been publicly advocating and teaching a customized options-oriented approach to acquiring ownership stakes in exceptional businesses at exceptional prices and to generate high yield income from low risk stocks.
True investing works . . . and smart, conservative, customized option trades designed to systematically reduce risk and perpetually lower the cost basis on the long term investor's portfolio makes it work better and faster.
Founder of Bern Factor LLC, a registered investment advisory firm located in Virginia, and the sole investment advisor representative of the firm at present. My association with the Marketplace subscription service, Friedrich Global Research, is a collaboration with Mycroft Friedrich, another contributor on Seeking Alpha. Together we have nearly 80 years of investing and analysis experience. I am a former CPA (1990 -2017) and became a CFA charter holder in 2000. I consider myself an expert in Quantitative and Qualitative analysis and have extensive experience in Technical Analysis. I also have a deep interest in stock market history and hold degrees in Economics (BSBA) and Management Information Systems (MBA). I have been actively involved with investment analysis and investment management since 1985 but have been a student of investing since the 1960s. I owned my first individual stock position while still in high school. I am a student of Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett. I have achieved a uniquely diverse experience from multiple careers that has allowed me to develop a broad perspective enabling me to look at the big picture of macroeconomics all the way down to the detail of a retail unit or factory floor. In my youth I was in retail, then served in reconnaissance during my tours in Vietnam. I have been a blue collar, union worker in a factory and a manager in services, hospitality and transportation as well as a manager of professional staffs. I have more than 20 years of experience each in both public and private sectors. I have personal points of reference that many analysts will never have. I bring more to the table than just the theories and models I have studied or built. To understand more about my investing philosophy please visit my website.
I worked for many years in management in the health care industry in the UK, in Bermuda, and for the last 20 years in Florida. The day I turned 59 1/2 I just got out of bed and decided I didn't want to work any more and that I would just take my various pensions from different countries, such as they were, roll them all into one big IRA, and just see if I could live by my wits. My investment objective is, therefore, to make enough so that I never have to work again, although it would be easy for me to do so if I wanted.
I could probably get by very well with a 10% annual yield on my capital, but of course more is more and much more is much more.
When I started out investing in stocks, I really didn't know what I was doing, but I had the occasional bit of luck, like investing every penny I had in BP in the summer of 2010, just when it couldn't go any lower. And it didn't. Then again I staked every dime I had on out of the money options on a drug that had a PDUFA date in January 2011. It was approved. Phew! But I was a nervous wreck and figured there had to be a better way.
Then about a year ago I started to study the whole business of options strategies, got myself a few books, and found out that you could sell options as well as buy them. This was a bit of a revelation, to say the least, because I had noticed that whenever I thought a stock would go up, it went down, and when I thought it would go down, it usually went up, but by selling options you could let other people's optimism work for you.
Then I found out about volatility. I had always known that the whole game was rigged, but now I began to understand how and why
I'm hoping that with some blog posts or articles here I can inform others about some of the things that I have learned in my time as a full time investor and personal hedge fund manager (O.K., layabout) so that they can avoid some basic errors, and I hope to attract enough criticism to be able to learn from those who know much more than me.
