I am a retired clinical psychologist, and administrator and owner of a rehabilitation clinic we founded 40 years ago. For over 55 years I have managed several portfolios composed of investments accumulated over our professional careers. Since the financial crisis of 2008, I have employed specialized, customized dividend growth strategies aimed at enhancing and growing a dividend income stream.
Since December 24, 2014, I have demonstrated on Seeking Alpha the ongoing construction and portfolio management of the Fill-The-Gap Portfolio aimed at highlighting strategies investors may utilize to close the gap between an average Social Security benefit and the much greater costs faced in retirement.
This portfolio has outperformed all of the broad market indexes by a very wide margin, growing dividend income and total portfolio value consistently while the broader indexes struggle in negative territory all year.
Let me show you how to build and grow your portfolio and dividend income, step by step, towards a comfortable and secure retirement.
Graduated in 2011 with degrees in Pre-Law and Business Administration from Eastern Washington University. Completed my MBA at Whitworth University in May of 2017. Began career as a Loan Officer, but am now working for Umpqua Bank as a Secondary Marketing Financial Analyst.
Started my first Roth IRA at the age of 16, but began seriously investing closer to 2011 at the age of 22. My investment strategy is largely focused on generating retirement income from dividend-paying stocks. I do not hold any professional investment licenses, but I spend a significant amount of time educating children, teenagers, and young adults on basic finance. I also specialize in cash-flow analysis for those nearing retirement or who are in retirement.
I began my journey as a registered representative in the financial planning industry upon attaining my Series 6 license to sell a limited set of securities products. I was also licensed to sell health and life insurance products as well to be able to provide clients with a comprehensive financial plan. I learned in this short time, that selling mutual funds and insurance products was not for me.
Following that experience, I worked as a manager in retail/commercial banking operations for an international banking firm learning about money management and risk management principles as applied to large real estate escrow banking. After banking, I worked in information systems analysis and programming, and finally in manufacturing. I am semi-retired now and focus my time on investment activities and generating investment income to supplement my current income.
I research the relevant data for content into my articles and try to be as accurate as possible. My articles detail some of the moves in my portfolio that are suited to my risk tolerances and income needs; Readers' of my articles should use this content to form their own opinions in light of their own risk tolerances and portfolio composition. The content of my articles should be used as a part of a larger comprehensive investment opinion and should be verified by a certified financial planner.
I am not an expert in any one area, but I do have enough competency in the following areas to construct an income generating portfolio along with overall growth of capital.
Dividend Growth Investing;
Master Limited Partnerships;
Growth Stocks (at a reasonable price);
Bonds (Investment grade, high yield, inflation protected, bank loans);
Stock Options Strategies (Long/Short) Currencies (Pairs Trading).
Supporting Skill Sets:
Technical Charting Analysis;
Portfolio Asset Allocation;
Understanding of Macro Economic Forecasts.
Disclosure: I am still learning all of the above competencies and plan on gaining even deeper insights so I can be an even better investor.
William Block is the President and Chief Investment Officer of W.G. Investment Research LLC (@WG_investments). Mr. Block is a CPA with experience in public accounting and the financial services industry. Mr. Block earned his Master of Accountancy degree in 2008 and his B.S. in Business Management in 2007.
Mr. Block has 10+ years of investing experience, and has been intrigued by the market from the start. Over the years, Mr. Block has learned that long-term investing is a discipline that, if followed, will help contribute to building lasting wealth. As such, most of Mr. Block's articles will be about the investments that he plans to hold for at least 3 to 5 years as long as the company's 'story' does not change. As a Seeking Alpha contributor, Mr. Block's main goal is to write about the companies that are key to his portfolio with the hope of promoting discussion (for or against the investment) from others within the SA community.

I have taken a large amount of coursework, both graduate and undergraduate, in economics, machine learning, mathematics, and statistics, culminating in a PhD in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University.
Currently, I'm a statistics professor at a large, state university (I'll leave it up to you to sleuth it out if you are so inclined) and teach mainly statistical machine learning at mainly the graduate level. Additionally, I research macroeconomic forecasting and using automated algorithms to analyze very large data sets.
Outside of researching and teaching, I spend a substantial amount of time reading and thinking about investing, accounting, and finance and I thoroughly enjoy both writing and read articles here on SA.
