|Includes: Bank of America Corporation (BAC)

In this hedge fund spotlight report, we are showcasing three top hedge fund managers that are global macro specialists. The featured global macro hedge fund managers include: Brevan Howard Asset Management, Round Table Investment Management, and Balestra Capital.

First off is Alan Howard’s Brevan Howard Asset Management, which is one of the world’s largest hedge fund managers with over $27,000 million in assets under management. The firm’s flagship fund is the global macro Brevan Howard Master Fund. The hedge fund oversees approximately $22,000 million in assets and was recently named to Barron’s 2009 Top 100 Hedge Fund list for its impressive 3-year compounded annual returns of 21.52%. During 2009, the hedge fund returned 19.10%, positioning it as #24 on the list.

Next from the Hedge Fund Directory is Charlotte-based Round Table Investment Management, which was founded by CEO & Chief Investment Officer Ian Banwell. Prior to founding Round Table in 2007, Mr. Banwell was Chief Investment Officer of Bank of America, where he was responsible for overseeing the management of interest-rate risk for the bank's $1.5 trillion in assets as well as the management of proprietary portfolios.

In February of 2010, the firm launched the Round Table Global Macro Fund, which as May 2010 managed approximately $235 million. The firm uses a discretionary strategy with 8-12 themes each consisting of 2-5 expressions. The firm’s themes are primarily directional in nature with risk allocations spread across rates, equities and FX.

The final global macro hedge manager in this week’s report is Balestra Capital, which was founded in 1979 by James Melcher. While the firm’s flagship hedge fund only managed to return 4.22% in 2009, that wasn’t enough to keep it off of Barron’s 2009 Top Hedge Fund list. Impressively, the global macro hedge fund’s 3-year compounded annual returns of 65.63% placed it as #2 on the top hedge fund list for the second year in a row. The fund had assets under management of more than $1 billion at the end of 2009.
