Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez discussed Alaska Air's (ALK) planned $1.9 billion purchase of Hawaiian Holdings (NASDAQ:HA) with the Dept. of Transportation, including the Chief of Staff for DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Hawaiian Holdings ticked up by 0.5%.
Lopez and the DOT discussed Friday the commitments made by Alaska Air (ALK) for the future of Hawaiian Airlines and to Hawaii consumers and the enforceability of those commitments, according to a DOT memorandum from Friday.
Lopez stressed the importance of inter-islands travel, the importance of preserving interisland flights at affordable prices. She also discussed concerns that Alaska Air (ALK) would repurpose Hawaiian Airlines Airbus jets and use them to replace Boeing (BA) jets on routes that don't serve Hawaii.
The DOT memorandum comes after United Airlines (UAL) expressed concerns about the $1.9 billion Alaska Air (ALK) deal to the Dept. of Justice on Wednesday, according to another DOT memo.
The latest disclosures come after Hawaiian (HA) shares ticked lower on Wednesday after a report about the DOT's review of the Alaska (ALK) deal. The DOT and some states want remedies from Alaska Air (ALK) for the deal.
Investors have been waiting for the DOT to decide on the transaction after the waiting period for the Dept. of Justice's antitrust review expired earlier this month.
