Access Pharmaceuticals, Inc. yesterday announced that Community Specialty Pharmacy Network has joined its specialty pharmacy network for the MuGard product. MuGard is a new product being produced by Access for oral mucositis.

Houston, Texas-based Access Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical that focuses on developing and marketing a series of proprietary products for the care of cancer patients. The company’s product line includes MuGard, ProLindac (for treating ovarian cancer) and Thirabine (a new nucleoside). Access also produces the CobaCyte and CobOral drug delivery systems. CSPN has more than 180 member pharmacies and offers a range of services, including mail distribution, therapy management, and web-based reporting.

MuGard is a mucoadhesive oral rinse intended for the management of oral mucositis, a side effect of many cancer treatments with potentially debilitating results. Up to 40% of chemotherapy and radiotherapy patients develop mucositis, and the percentages rise for patients undergoing radiotherapy for the head and neck, as well as patients receiving stem cell transplantation. The market for this new form of treatment is estimated to be in excess of $1 billion worldwide.

Access also recently announced the launch of the new MuGard PRSC (Patient Reimbursement and Support Center) which will give patients improved access to MuGard. This will be accomplished through enhancing MuGard distribution and payment plans through medical and health insurance. CSPN is essential to this program, as it hinges on a national distribution network of pharmacies.

Anthony Mottola, VP of Managed Care and Market Access, Access Pharmaceuticals, Inc. said, “Broadening our specialty pharmacy reach is a key part of our MuGard distribution and market access strategy. The expansion of our market access strategy which combines various Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM’s), like CVS Caremark, large payers like Humana and United Healthcare along with additional networks of specialty pharmacies, such as CSPN gives us the opportunity to provide added patient and provider support services, through our full-service HUB, the MuGard Patient Reimbursement and Support Center (MuGard PRSC).”
