Figure AI, a startup building a humanoid robot, confirmed on Thursday that it had raised $675M from investors including Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos, Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and others.
Other investors in the Series B round include Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Amazon's $1B Industrial Innovation Fund, OpenAI Startup Fund, Parkway Venture Capital, Intel Capital, Align Ventures and ARK Invest. The new investment was done at a $2.6B valuation, the company said.
Bezos and Nvidia's involvement in the funding round was reported earlier this month.
Figure AI's robot, known as Figure 01, is an artificial intelligence-powered robot that acts like a human and can be used to perform tasks deemed dangerous or unsuitable for humans.
The goal of Figure AI is "to develop general purpose humanoids that make a positive impact on humanity and create a better life for future generations."
In conjunction with the funding, Figure AI also announced it is partnering with OpenAI to develop "next generation AI models for humanoid robots."
"We've always planned to come back to robotics and we see a path with Figure to explore what humanoid robots can achieve when powered by highly capable multimodal models," said Peter Welinder, VP of Product and Partnerships at OpenAI. "We're blown away by Figure's progress to date and we look forward to working together to open up new possibilities for how robots can help in everyday life."
Tesla (TSLA) is also working on its own humanoid-like robot, known as Optimus, which Chief Executive Elon Musk said recently could wind up being the company's biggest business over time.
