Luckily we tried to be prepared for that. We saved for 18 years. Only problem was that we saved for each to have 4 years at a public school, but two of ours ended up going to private schools.

I agree. That's a great reminder! I feel the same way about photos. We didn't take enough. We also worry about losing our digital photos one day.

You reminded me something that I have been postponing for a while - that, already being close to the other side of the fence at 76, I too need to construct a long term low maintenance portfolio. This one, which obviously needs further refinement, seems to have performed quite decently relative to the market over the last thirty seven years.

@TheMarkFactor I only work on a PC and never had a social media account...still the internet is addictive. BTW I also resolved not to take photos on the phone. Went to Monument Valley and the bus stopped, everyone piled out and took photos and i thought, no, I just want to absorb the majesty of the scenery, and I have followed that thought wherever I go.

What is arthritis?

Once on a bus, when I was in my 20s somewhat tipsy reading a newspaper, a priest sat next to me.

Me: Do you know what arthritis is?

He (looking at my condition): It's a disease caused by sinful and unruly life. excess, consumption of alcohol, drugs, marijuana, crack, and certainly lost women, prostitutes, promiscuity, sex, binges and other things I dare not say.

Me: (my eyes now widened, I shut up and continued reading the newspaper).

A litter later.

He: How long have you had arthritis?

Me: I don't have arthritis! It says here in the paper that the Pope has it.

I agree that social media should be limited and I feel much better being out with real people.

Very interesting and unexpected. I always felt the additional time was well worth the effort, but everyone is different especially if you are no longer enjoying the process compared to the rewards. I also plan to move to more funds as my outside activities in retirement increase, but I will always manage a core group of stocks.

Good idea. I think that always looking for what is a better buy than what you already got and is doing satisfactorily may be the main cause for the mediocre performance of many portfolios. LFAB bias - always looking for another (or a) blonde!
