Dominion Energy (D-1%) says it is teaming up with The Nature Conservancy to develop a large-scale solar project from a former surface coal mine in southwestern Virginia; financial details are not disclosed.
Dominion says the Highlands Solar project will repurpose 1,200 acres of the former Red Onion mine and surrounding properties to generate 50 MW of solar energy, or enough to power 12,500 homes at peak production.
The company says it will jointly develop the project with Antares Group, which will serve as the owner's engineer, with plans to begin construction in 2024 or 2025, subject to approval by the Virginia State Corporation Commission.
